Step 1: Back Up Everything You Want to Keep

Before you erase anything, copy your photos, documents, browser bookmarks and saved passwords to an external drive or a cloud service (OneDrive, iCloud, Google Drive). Then sign out of your accounts, including Microsoft, Apple ID/iCloud, Google, and any password manager, so the laptop is no longer linked to you. The FTC recommends this same back-up-then-erase order.

Step 2: Wipe Your Personal Data

Deleting files or emptying the Recycle Bin does not remove them. Here’s how to erase a laptop properly:

Windows 11

• Go to Settings ? System ? Recovery ? Reset this PC.
• Choose Remove everything.
• Under Change settings, turn on Clean data. This overwrites the drive instead of just deleting file pointers. It can take a few hours, so leave the laptop plugged in.

Mac (macOS Monterey or later, Apple silicon or T2 chip)

• Go to System Settings ? General ? Transfer or Reset ? Erase All Content and Settings.
• This signs you out of Apple services and securely erases the Mac (Apple’s instructions).
• Older Macs: sign out of iCloud and Messages, then erase the drive and reinstall macOS from Recovery (Apple’s guide for older Macs).

Is a factory reset enough?

For most people, a full reset with Clean data (Windows) or Erase All Content and Settings (Mac) is a good start. But there are limits:

• Solid-state drives (SSDs) store data in areas that normal overwriting can’t always reach. NIST’s media-sanitization guidance (SP 800-88) recommends a drive-level sanitize or cryptographic erase, or physical destruction.
• Dead laptops can’t be reset at all, so the drive has to be wiped on another machine or physically destroyed.
• Business laptops with client, patient or financial data usually need documented destruction.

Laptop batteries are lithium-ion, and they are the main reason a laptop should never go in a curbside bin. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and the Phoenix Fire Department both say not to put lithium-ion batteries in the trash or the recycling bin, because they can start fires in garbage trucks and sorting facilities.

• Built-in battery? Leave it in. Bring the whole laptop to a recycler.
• Removable battery? Tape over the metal contacts and bring it along with the laptop.
• Swollen or bulging battery? Stop charging it, don’t puncture or pry it out, keep it somewhere cool away from anything flammable, and call us before bringing it in.
